Spike Lee Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

Spike Lee is featured in a radio ad being played in South Carolina in which he endorses Bernie Sanders, telling listeners that the Vermont senator “will do the right thing.”

Sanders trails Hillary Clinton by double digits in the state, according to recent polls. Democrats vote in the state’s primary on Saturday.

“Waaaaake up! Wake up, South Carolina !” Lee says in the spot, which was first posted by ABC News on Tuesday. “This is your dude, Spike Lee. And you know that I know that you know that the system is rigged! And for too long we’ve given our votes to corporate puppets. Sold the okie doke. Ninety-nine percent of Americans were hurt by the Great Recession of 2008, and many are still recovering.”

Lee notes that Sanders “takes no money from corporations. Nada. Which means he’s not on the take, and when Bernie gets into the White House, he will do the right thing.”

The Sanders and Clinton campaign have been deploying celebrities in the state as they target its heavy concentration of African American voters. Danny Glover campaigned for Sanders on Monday, and Morgan Freeman narrates a TV spot for Clinton that began running on Sunday. Vivica Fox and Angela Bassett campaigned for Clinton last week.
