OWN has released the first trailer for the new family megachurch drama “Greenleaf,” which marks the return of Oprah Winfrey to scripted television.
The series follows estranged daughter and disillusioned preacher Grace Greenleaf ( Merle Dandridge ) returning home on the occasion of the mysterious death of her sister. Upon reentering the world of the Memphis megachurch run by her parents, played by Lynn Whitfield and Keith David, she begins to realize that her family is hiding things.
“If I thought your Uncle Mac did anything, do you think he’d still be alive?” David’s Bishop James Greenleaf says threateningly.
The show will also mark Winfrey’s return to scripted TV after a two-decade break. She will play Grace’s aunt Mavis McCready in the show.
“This time brother, you’re going down,” McCready says. The trailer also includes Grace’s return home, mourning the loss of her sister, Faith, and scenes of worship in the powerful megachurch.
“Greenleaf” will launch with a two-night premiere on Tuesday, June 21 and Wednesday, June 22, before finishing out the 13-episode first season on Wednesday nights.
“Greenleaf” is produced for OWN by Lionsgate Television. Executive producers are Oprah Winfrey, Craig Wright and Clement Virgo.
