Five police officers in Dallas were killed and seven others were injured by snipers on Thursday night during a street demonstration protesting this week’s police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana .
One of the suspects was arrested during a shootout, according to Dallas Police . Another reportedly turned himself in.
Police were also negotiating with a thurd suspect as of 12:10 a.m. PT on Friday morning after exchanging gunfire with the man, who claimed to have multiple bombs.
According to Police Chief David Brown , the suspect in the garage told officers “the end is coming-there are bombs all over this garage and downtown.” They “planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could,” Brown added.
The unidentified snipers were believed to be shooting from an elevated position from above the crowd while one of the suspects took to the street and hid behind a large column with a high-powered rifle before he was arrested.
As of Thursday night, three of the injured police officers were in critical condition, two others were in surgery.
Thursday’s deadly attack came hours after President Barack Obama spoke to a nation on edge after two African American men were shot and killed by police this week. The videos quickly went viral, one of which was broadcast live on Facebook .
“When incidents like this occur, there’s a big chunk of our citizenry that feels as if, because of the color of their skin, they are not being treated the same, and that hurts, and that should trouble all of us,” Obama said. “This is not just a black issue, not just a Hispanic issue. This is an American issue that we all should care about.”
