Uggie the dog, who became a canine star after his memorable role in the Oscar best-picture winner “The Artist,” has died. He was 13.

The Jack Russell terrier was euthanized on Friday after battling prostate cancer, his owner, Los Angeles animal trainer Omar Von Muller, announced Wednesday on Facebook. “Our beloved boy has passed away,” he wrote in a post.

Uggie was most famous for his role as Jean Dujardin’s furry friend in 2011’s silent film “The Artist.” Bérénice Bejo (pictured above with Uggie) also starred in the movie, which nabbed five Academy Awards.

Uggie also appeared in Will Ferrell-Zach Galifianakis comedy “The Campaign,” Reese Witherspoon-Robert Pattinson film “Water for Elephants” and “Bones” star David Boreanaz’s “Mr. Fix It.”

Uggie won the Palm Dog Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and the 2012 Golden Collar Award. He was the first canine to have a paw print ceremony at Hollywood’s famous TCL Chinese Theatre.
