STATEMENT FROM DOMINIQUE SHARPTON, PRESIDENT OF EDUCATION FOR BETTER AMERICA (EBA) REGARDING TODAY’S NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE STORY ABOUT EBA

Under the direction of my Attorney and advice from my doctor, I have not commented on my ongoing personal injury lawsuit. It is my Attorney who determined the figures in my lawsuit, and it is he who asked to handle all on-the-record statements pertaining to the case.

In terms of the National Review Online article, after reading it, I am still at a loss as to what is considered “shady” as we have gone to great lengths to be transparent. There are no salaries listed because EBA pays no salaries.

Many civil rights groups have 501c3’s or separate entities that they partner with and it is known to our donors that we have a relationship with National Action Network (NAN). In fact, EBA co-convened my father’s 50th Anniversary Education Forum at New York University last October. NAN and EBA share one board member and it is not uncommon for individuals to sit on many non-profit boards.

It’s not clear to me how someone who is operating in the sunlight is being accused of operating in the shade. And, because I chose not to do an interview with an outlet that has a blatant bias for my father and me, I am wrongly being accused of being shady.

Finally, EBA has served over 15,000 students across the country in the 2015 fiscal year alone and held almost 50 events on a shoestring operating budget of less than $200k. We are working tirelessly to fulfill our mission of building bridges between policymakers and the classrooms, and we have successfully created a dialogue between policymakers, community leaders, educators, parents, and students in urban areas.
