“ Selma “ star David Oyelowo and director Ava DuVernay are staging a commemorative march on Sunday in Selma, Ala., to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Common, Oprah Winfrey and other cast members will also participate along with producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.
The event will include a Q&A moderated by Congresswoman Terri Sewell at Selma High School for local high school students and teachers. The march will be preceded by an address from Selma mayor George Evans at Selma City Hall, followed by welcomes from Rev. Dion Culliver of Tabernacle Baptist Church and Rev. Leodis Strong of Brown AME Chapel.
After the march to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, there will be a special screening of the Civil Rights drama at the Selma Walton Theater for Alabama state officials and the film’s local cast and crew. “I’m honored that Paramount Pictures and the cast has put Selma to the forefront of the nation again during MLK weekend. The dream marches on,” said Mayor Evans. Paramount Pictures will also host two free screenings on Monday at the Selma Walton Theater, added to the already announced free screenings in Selma throughout the month of January.
“Selma” was nominated Thursday for best picture and best original song Oscars while DuVernay and Oyelowo were overlooked.
